Session 2: A Handful of Dirt

Weeks had passed since school began. Keleth had excelled at his studies, much to Enelle's chagrin. Malzeer had dutifully performed dock work for the Aaron with the Thieves Guild. A night before the session, Malzeer had his first opportunity to run deliveries. He did well, until his final delivery got him caught by some rookie town guards who he ambushed and sunk in the town's river. Malzeer was a bit out of sorts during the session, as he reflected on his being a murderer.

Keleth was studying in the library when he received a missive urging him to come to Archmage Vel's office. There he received a quest to find a missing teacher named Arelen and return to Vel with a handful of dirt from wherever she was found.

Meanwhile, a street urchin approached Malzeer with a cryptic letter, presumably from Aaron. It gave him directions out of town. When he me up with Keleth, they decided to pursue Keleth's quest first and investigated Arelen's home. There they found similar instructions as Malzeer's letter described, so they set off out of town.

On their way they helped Brom do a short errand for the alchemist to earn some healing potions, gathering herbs in the graveyard. They were disrupted by zombies emerging from the sewer drain, and rushed to tell the town guard. They bumped into Enelle and Delba when they collected their healing potions, learning that the two girls were sisters. All their distractions out of the way, they set out into the wilderness to seek the missing teacher.

After fighting off some boars in the wilderness, the directions led them to a log cabin near a waterfall. A quick peek through the window alerted them to a trapdoor being closed, but when they breached the cabin they were assaulted by a ghostly spirit.

By the time they defeated the spirit and opened the trapdoor, they were running low on resources. The cave they emerged into echoed with the crashing noise of the waterfall, but the path beyond was locked behind a door. The room began flooding, but they managed to find a hidden drain, which opened the door and let the water flow out in a trench.

When they emerged into the larger area of the cavern, they stumbled into the midst of a battle. Arelen was pitted against a horrible spiked creature with a single eye - a Nothic. Before they could help the teacher, the Nothic struck her down and turned its gaze onto them. Malzeer nearly fell to the abomination, but Arelen had weakened it enough that the two boys barely won the scrappy fight.
